Hi Sunny,

Happy New Year.

Dave Kozischek and I discussed these topics this morning and I have sent him some backup information for discussion on your call.

My recommendations:

  1. In Table 9, keep footnotes 1 and 2 because they are consistent with all of the application specifications in IEEE. These specifications are based on CWDM systems.

Add a footnote 3: “Using 0.5 dB/km may not support operation at 10 km for Fibre Channel applications.”

I am not sure what you mean by “clarify the 1304nm.” There is a footnote in the 100G-LR link budget tables that notes “aThe channel insertion loss is calculated using the maximum distance specified in Table 2-1 and cabled optical fiber attenuation of 0.43 dB/km at 1304.5 nm plus an allocation for connection and splice loss given in 5.2.1.”

  1. Regarding optical return loss, again these values are consistent with the DR application specifications in IEEE

The basis for the original work were presented in 802.3cd for 500m 100G-DR

The basis for 2km and 10km 100G-DR were presented in 802.3cu

Best regards,

Steve

Subject: [EXTERNAL]--[fibre_channel] RE: FC-PI-8 interim ZOOM call

Hi all,

In preparation of the interim call, please find below content for further discussion.

  • Note 1 – It appears to be related to the center wavelength specified in Table 6. Recommend having one spec of 0.4dB/km (also aligns with all other international standards), and clarify the 1304.nm spec in footnote.
  • Note 2 – This is outdated and needs to be corrected. ANSI/TIA-568.3 OS2 attenuation spec has changed to 0.4dB/km, which is in alignment with ISO/IEC 11801-1.

How are these values calculated? How often are these used in practice given standard-compliant connectors must meet the IEC spec of 55dB.

Cheers,

Sunny Xu
